March Birth Stone

The belief in the magical and mystical power of gems goes back to ancient history. The ancient Babylonians used gems as talismans, associated them with astrology, and believed in their healing properties. Particular gems were believed to hold these powers through their association with particular gods. Modern healers often have explanations for their art, usually relating to the effects of light reflected off, channeled through the stones, or to some form of vibration within the crystals.

Pisces Birth Stone - Feb 20th - March 20th

Bloodstone is the original birthstone for March. Today, bloodstone, jasper, and aquamarine are all considered the gemstones for March.

Bloodstone
By her who in March was born
No gem save Bloodstone shall be worn
They will ensure her constancy
True friendship and fidelity

The red inclusions are supposed to resemble spots of blood; hence the name "bloodstone". The name "heliotrope" derives from various ancient notions about the manner in which the mineral reflects light.

In the Middle Ages the red spots were thought to be the blood of Jesus, and the stone was believed to have miraculous powers, including making its wearer invisible.

Aquamarine
Aquamarine is the birthstone associated with March. It is also the gemstone for the 19th Anniversary.
People in the Middle Ages thought that aquamarine could magically overcome the effects of poison.
Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would ensure a safe voyage, and guarantee a safe return; they often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep. They believed the mermaid fish-like lower body was made of aquamarine.
